As it is the end of the half term we celebrated all our Ice Palace learning by sharing our dance performance with Year 4. The were really impressed with the Story telling in the piece and could recognise the story from their learning last year. We had worked really hard on creating contrasting movements for the snowflakes and the wolves and concentrated hard on using different levels. It was quite a challenge to work on a dance piece with all 90 children but they worked with great focus and as an ensemble. Well done Year 3.
After we performed our dance we shared all our other work. We were all able to talk in detail about our learning and share what we had enjoyed the most and even the process we had used to complete our learning.
What an amazing day we have had! Today we went to Snozone to experience the cold and what it is like to go sledging. We had so much fun wizzing and sliding down the slopes. More than that though, we were able to make links to our Ice Palace class novel and now we really understand how Ivan must feel in the sub zero temperatures searching for his brother.
A huge thank you to all the parents who came with us on the trip.
You mingle remember a couple of weeks ago we learned some sketching and shading skills ( hatching, crosshatching, stippling and blending.) This week we have used the skills to create a piece of art work. We sketched the outline of some of the animals from our Ice Palace novel before using the skills to add light, shade and texture.
This half term we have been working on some Geography objectives. We started off by locating the continents and oceans of the world. We then moved on to locating countries in Europe and naming their capital cities. We consolidated this learning by playing. Matching game where we had countries, capital cities and the shape of the country and we had to make correct sets. We used a map to help us recognising year shapes of the countries. Well done Year 3.
This week in out art we have been learning some different skills for shading pencil drawings and adding texture to these. The skills we learned were hatching, crosshatching, stippling and blending. We had a go at using different strength pencils to see the different effects. We found that the harder the pencil lead the lighter the mark And the softer the lead the darker the mark. Below are some of our experimentations. We cannot wait to apply these skill to our drawings of animals from our Ice Palace book.
This half term our class novel is Ice Palace. We began by thinking about the concept of winter. We knew that some people love winter and some people don’t. We learned new word TREACHEROUS and decided this was a good way to describe winter. We used out SPO sequence to make notes on why winter is beautiful and why it is treacherous. We then planned two contrasting paragraphs using our SPO template before writing these up as full paragraphs. Have a read of these ones, what is your opinion about winter?
This half term we have been using our collaborative skills to design a ‘Junk Model’ Stig. We worked in groups to design the different body parts and plan and collect the materials we would use.
Once we had collected our material, we needed to adapt our designs and plans for a number of reasons:
We did not have the materials we had planned to use.
We had found better materials to use.
People who were making arms and legs decided the body parts needed to be the same and equal length as their partner.
Once we had adapted our plans, then came the build. We used our Wyldstyle skills to work as a team and effectively join our materials together to make body parts. Finally, we joined all the body parts together and made Stig.
After Stig was completed we discussed whether he should be part of our school community and thought of arguments why he should. These included:
Thomas: I believe Stig should be part of our community so he can learn to talk English.
Samu: I think Stig should come to ACE so he can learning to read and write.
Reagan: I believe being in our class will help him gain more knowledge.
Atheiro: If he is part of our community he will make friends and learn how to communicate!
We found it very hard to think of and reasons why he shouldn’t be part of our community so we voted he should be the newest member of 3HL!
This week we have been learning about the Bronze Age. We used our collaboration skills to work in groups to research the Bronze Age on DK Findout. We researched How Bronze was made. Bronze Age Settlements and the chose some other interesting facts ourselves.
We then worked together to produce a poster to share \all our learning about the Bronze Age and presented this to our class. Great team work 3HL!
